Dressings are used to cover open wounds, they prevent cross contamination for all parties involved. Ideally any open wound should be cleaned and covered as soon as possible with a sterile dressing, to prevent any surface or airborne contaminants from getting into the wound, or for any of the patients blood to contaminate other people or surfaces
